I. The journey

From a boy of fifteen to the Olympic piste

A boy and his blade — the passion that would shape an entire career.

V
ũ Thành An first picked up a blade at the age of 15. In the years that followed he collected results at home and across the region, before reaching the biggest stage in sport — the Olympic Games.

He was chosen to carry the national flag for Team Vietnam at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the 2018 Asian Games, and two editions of the SEA Games, in 2017 and 2019.

At the opening ceremony of the 31st SEA Games, staged on home soil, he was the athlete chosen to take the competitors’ oath — among the proudest honours of his career.

The road was never smooth. But instead of giving up, I chose to change the way I thought, change the way I trained — and keep walking it.

II. Character

Pushing past his own limits

On the piste — where every limit is there to be broken.

There were spells when the work simply refused to turn into results. Rather than walk away, Vũ Thành An chose to change his mindset and rebuild his training — and press on.

That persistence — an appetite for difficulty and a constant hunger to compete — is what raised his ceiling a little higher each day. For him, fencing delivers far more than fitness, conditioning and reaction speed; it builds willpower, discipline and composure under pressure.

Every session is another lesson in getting back up after a defeat — and coming back stronger than yesterday.

III. Philosophy

The “Nonstop” philosophy

After years at the top of the sport and a cabinet full of medals, Vũ Thành An still carries himself like a man who is never finished learning.

At Vietnam Royal Fencing Club, he wants to hand his students more than blade work — he wants to hand them nerve, self-belief and the refusal to quit.

That is the “Nonstop” philosophy — don’t wait for a miracle, go and make one. The club believes the road to becoming strong always begins with never stopping.

On the world stage, facing genuinely strong opponents, I came to understand how much I still had to learn and how far I still had to go
But one thing about me has barely changed: the harder it is, the more I want to try. The stronger the opponent, the more I want the bout.
Perhaps that is how I got to where I am today — and how I intend to keep going.
For me, difficulty has never been a reason to stop. If anything, the harder it gets, the more I want to rise to it.
I have always believed Vietnamese athletes can step onto the biggest stages in the world with confidence, with nerve, and ready to take on anyone.
The stronger the opponent, the more the fight is worth having.

Nonstop — don’t wait for a miracle, go and make one.
